Margaret Elward Show held at Calstock, Cornwall (East Cornwall CC), 11th October 2008

JUDGE: Mr Allan Trigg                                                                   NUMBER IN SHOW: 69

BEST DUTCH
: Sarah Stribley – Golden Agouti adult boar

With an entry of 66 plus 3 new colours (Chocolate Agouti), most colours were well presented with the quality particularly good within the adult classes. A good sow from Razzamatazz Stud stood out in the Adult Red classes and was involved in all the relevant challenges. Whilst in several classes, the winners picked themselves; this was not the case in the Adult Black Dutch class where three of the four entries commanded serious consideration.  Sue Hearn’s champion prevailed but it was hard lines on the runner up, a good boar from Saracen Stud (Gary Clark).

The Adult Cream class provided the biggest breed class (8) with a good coloured boar from Alan Wilson taking the honours. Another good feature of the show was the increased interest in Silver Agouti Dutch with eight covering the three age groups. The adult sow of Palace Cavies proved a worthy winner and later took the New Members Class.

Prior to the show, I had envisaged my best being Black in colour but this proved to be very wrong as a Golden Agouti entry (new to me) took the top honours for the first time. This pig may not have the size and presence of some pigs but it possessed good all round markings with little to fault and won well with no misgivings.  Congratulations Sarah, I hope you can make it a champion.

Quality was less competitive in the 5/8 months and u/5 months classes. In the intermediates, a useful Black boar from Wilmot Goldsworthy took the section. Well shown as usual but a heavy cheek spoils. In the young classes, I liked the winning Red from Stuart Inch (would make a useful outcross for any stud if he would sell it) although the stops are rather short. Otherwise, a promising pig.

Three Chocolate Agoutis (new colour) completed the entry. Madelaine Coomber is doing much to promote the colour and took the adult class but I thought the youngster from Alfa Stud (who is that?) had the slightly better undercolour.

Thanks to all the Cornish fanciers for arranging such a good, well run show at such a pleasant location.
